Advising Tracks
Finance Concentration
All students with a Finance Concentration must complete
the six (6) units department "core" and take an additional twelve (12) units in Finance
(
excluding Finance 310
) for a total of eighteen (18) units in Finance.
Finance Core: All undergraduate students in the Finance Department are required to fulfill the following 6 units requirement:
- Finance 321, Financial Management II (3);
- Either Finance 340, Introduction to Investment (3); or Finance 342, Capital and Money Markets (3)
Advisory Tracks: Students must complete 12 additional units of elective courses in Finance. Students are strongly advised to choose one of the following advisory tracks and select as many courses as possible from that track in order to complete the 18 hour requirement for the concentration. Students are encouraged but not required to consult with faculty advisors when selecting courses.

Insurance is a trillion dollar business that employs more than 2.5 million people in the US alone. As the population ages and wealth grows, the demand for insurance professionals will increase dramatically. Jobs in insurance involve helping individuals and businesses manage risk to protect themselves from catastrophic losses and anticipate potential risk. Finance students concentrating in the insurance field can work in a variety of areas including underwriting, sales representative, asset management, customer service, claims adjusting, financial planning, or in sales.

Financial Institutions Management Track
Commercial banks are in the business of providing banking services to individuals, small businesses and large organizations. Popular jobs in this area are Credit Analyst, Loan Officer, Branch Manager, Trust Officer and Mortgage Banker. Other jobs involve accounting, marketing and advertising, commercial card operations, securities transfer, wire operations, private banking, cash management services, installment loans, and loan servicing. Investment banks help companies and governments issue securities, help investors purchase securities, manage financial assets, trade securities and provide financial advice. The business of most investment banks falls into two main categories: underwriting and mergers and acquisitions.

Real Estate Professions Track
There are more than 5 million people in the United States employed in identifiable real estate fields such as title insurance, construction, mortgage banking, property management, real estate appraisals, brokerage and leasing, and real estate development. In addition, many are engaged in corporate real estate and in real estate lending in commercial banks, savings and loans, and 5 insurance companies where their jobs are not included in the real estate sector. As important as the field of real estate might be, it is also worth recognizing how interesting the work in this field is.

Corporate and International Financial Management Track
A career in corporate finance means you would work for a company to help it find money to run the business, grow the business, make acquisitions, plan for its financial future, and manage any cash on hand. The most popular job categories include international and operationally-oriented positions. Positions for qualified individuals can be found in firms engaged in importing and exporting, in firms with foreign operations, and in banks and investment firms.
Finance 370, 371, 373, and 375 are suggested for those with International Finance interests.

Investments and Financial Planning Track
Financial planners use their knowledge of tax and investment strategies, securities, insurance, pension plans, and real estate to develop and implement financial plans for individuals and businesses. Securities sales representatives, also called stockbrokers, perform a variety of tasks depending on their specific job duties. They may also explain stock market terms and trading practices, offer financial counseling or advice on the purchase or sale of particular securities, and devise an individual client financial portfolio. Most securities sales representatives serve individual investors, but others specialize in institutional investors.
